Cold-Pressed Sacha Inchi Oil: A Buyer's Specification Guide

"Cold-pressed" is on almost every Sacha Inchi oil sales sheet, and on its own it tells a buyer very little. It is a claim about process, not a guarantee of quality. It does not say how fresh the oil is, whether it has been blended with something cheaper, or how much of its vitamin E will count on a label. Those answers are in the certificate of analysis, so it pays to know which lines to ask for.

This guide covers what the grade names mean, which parameters to write into a purchase specification, and what published testing of commercial Sacha Inchi oil shows about where quality actually varies.

In short: Codex defines cold-pressed oil as oil obtained mechanically, without applied heat. Extra virgin has no international definition for seed oils. Specify on the numbers instead: fatty acid profile (ALA and linoleic acid), peroxide value, acid value or free fatty acids, tocopherol fractions, and a sterol profile if adulteration is a concern. Every figure should be tied to a lot number and a named test method.

What the grade names actually mean

The international reference is the Codex Alimentarius Standard for Named Vegetable Oils (CXS 210-1999). Sacha Inchi is not one of the oils it names, but its process definitions are the common language buyers and suppliers use:

Extra virgin is the term to be careful with. Codex keeps it for olive oil, which has its own standard. Peru's technical norm NTP 151.400 does grade Sacha Inchi oil into extra virgin and virgin, so the label has a defined meaning for Peruvian product. Elsewhere it is a marketing word. If a supplier outside Peru offers "extra virgin" Sacha Inchi oil, ask which parameters back it up.

"Without the application of heat" is harder than it sounds

A screw expeller produces friction heat whether or not a heater is switched on. A 2018 study of Sacha Inchi seeds on a single screw press ran the press head at 60, 75 and 90 °C. It found that seed drying changed the oil yield at every press-head temperature, and that the resulting oils differed in their fatty acid levels. The press is part of the specification, not just background.

The practical question for a supplier is not "is it cold-pressed?" but "what is the oil temperature at the press outlet, and is it logged per batch?" A supplier who logs temperature can show you the record. A supplier who does not is giving you an assurance, not evidence.

The parameters to specify

These are the lines a Sacha Inchi oil certificate of analysis should carry, why each matters, and a standard method you can name in the specification so results from different laboratories can be compared.

Codex's quality limits give a floor for the two most common lines. For cold-pressed and virgin oils, peroxide value is up to 15 meq O₂/kg and acid value is up to 4.0 mg KOH/g. For refined oils the limits are 10 meq O₂/kg and 0.6 mg KOH/g. Acid value is roughly twice the free fatty acid percentage expressed as oleic acid, which helps when one supplier quotes acid value and another quotes FFA.

Buyer's note: Codex limits are a ceiling, not a target. Sacha Inchi oil is roughly half alpha-linolenic acid, which makes it more prone to oxidation than most culinary oils, and omega-3 buyers typically set tighter limits than Codex. Set your limits based on your application and shelf-life needs, then make the supplier report against them lot by lot.

What testing of commercial oils shows

The best public picture of how Sacha Inchi oil quality varies comes from two 2019 studies by Ramos-Escudero and colleagues. They tested the same set of 27 commercial Sacha Inchi oils bought in Lima, Peru, where the crop is most established. These were retail oils, not bulk lots, but they show where the problems lie.

Freshness varied widely

Peroxide values ranged from 1.87 to 17.47 meq O₂/kg, so at least one sample was above the Codex ceiling for cold-pressed oil. Free acidity ranged from 0.16% to 1.86%. Oxidative stability in the Rancimat test at 100 °C averaged 5.6 hours, from 2.72 to 16.00 hours, a spread of almost six times between oils sold under the same name. Under Peru's own norm, 60% of the samples graded as extra virgin and 40% as virgin.

The lesson is that one peroxide value on a sales sheet does not describe a supply. You need a figure for each lot.

Adulteration was detectable

In the companion study, ALA across the 27 samples ranged from 10% to 55%. Samples judged authentic averaged 46.13% ALA and 34.66% linoleic acid. Genuine Sacha Inchi oil does not come in at 10% ALA. The researchers also found brassicasterol, a sterol typical of rapeseed oil, in six samples, which they flagged as suspected adulteration.

This is why the sterol profile is on the list above. An oil can be blended back to a believable ALA figure, but foreign sterols are much harder to hide. For a new supplier, or any lot where the fatty acid profile looks off, a sterol profile is cheap insurance.

Red flags on a Sacha Inchi oil CoA: ALA well below the mid-40s percent range. Brassicasterol present on the sterol profile. A peroxide value with no p-anisidine value alongside it, on oil that has been in storage. A "total tocopherols" figure with no fractions. Any result without a lot number or test method.

Tocopherols: a strength that needs careful labelling

Sacha Inchi oil is rich in tocopherols. The commercial oils in the 2019 study averaged about 2,220 mg/kg, within a range of 700 to 3,300 mg/kg. That natural antioxidant load is part of why the oil holds up as well as it does for such a polyunsaturated oil.

The detail formulators miss is the split. In the same study, γ-tocopherol averaged around 1,256 mg/kg and δ-tocopherol around 928 mg/kg, while α-tocopherol averaged only about 37 mg/kg. Nutrition labelling generally counts vitamin E as α-tocopherol. So a large total-tocopherol figure does not become a large vitamin E claim on a finished product label.

For supplement and food brands, ask for the α, γ and δ fractions separately and work out any vitamin E declaration from the α figure. For cosmetic brands, the total tocopherol content is still a useful antioxidant story for the oil itself, as long as it is described accurately.

Why unrefined matters for this oil

Refining removes more than flavour. In a 2019 study of rapeseed oil through each refining stage, deodorisation removed the most tocopherols, followed by bleaching, neutralisation and degumming. Phytosterols were lost too, mainly during neutralisation and deodorisation. Sacha Inchi oil was not the oil tested, but the chemistry of those steps is the same.

For an ingredient whose appeal rests on its omega-3 profile and natural tocopherols, that is the case for cold-pressed, unrefined supply. You keep the minor components that support stability, and you get a process claim you can document from seed to drum.

"Cold-pressed" is where a Sacha Inchi oil specification starts, not where it ends. Published testing of commercial oils shows wide variation in freshness and real cases of blending, and a label name catches neither. Write the parameters into your specification, name the test methods, require a CoA for every lot, and test a sample yourself before your first order.

How can I tell if Sacha Inchi oil has been adulterated?

Check the fatty acid profile and the sterol profile. Authentic Sacha Inchi oil is dominated by alpha-linolenic and linoleic acids, and a 2019 study of commercial oils used brassicasterol, a sterol marker for rapeseed oil, to flag suspected blending in 6 of 27 samples. An ALA figure well below the typical range, or brassicasterol on the sterol profile, is a reason to reject or retest the lot.

Does Sacha Inchi oil's vitamin E content count toward a vitamin E label claim?

Only partly. Most of the tocopherol in Sacha Inchi oil is gamma- and delta-tocopherol, with very little alpha-tocopherol, and vitamin E on nutrition labels is generally expressed as alpha-tocopherol. Ask for the alpha, gamma and delta fractions separately rather than a single total-tocopherol figure.
